“THIS EDITION OF HEADPRESS HAS BEEN APPROPRIATED BY THE HEADPRESS PANTHERS!”

The legendary John Sinclair, 1960s cultural revolutionary, Detroit poet, political prisoner, MC5 manager, and chairman of the White Panthers, was an early victim of the War on Drugs, facing a sentence of twenty years to life in prison for giving two joints to an undercover narcotics officer. Sinclair served 29 months before his legal victory on appeal changed the law for good. The long campaign came under the international spotlight when John Lennon wrote a song for him, “John Sinclair,” and performed at a benefit in 1971, with Yoko Ono, Stevie Wonder, Bob Seger, Phil Ochs, Allen Ginsberg, and many others.

Edited by John Sinclair, HEADPRESS 28 marks the fortieth anniversary of the original White Panthers movement and heralds the launch of the “HEADPRESS PANTHERS,” which celebrates the union with historical counterculture figure, social reformer and living legend, John Sinclair, to spread “THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO UNPOPULAR CULTURE,” thus promoting free speech through independent writing and art without boundaries.
